Snowfall in the Spring

Great for snow dogs, okay for squirrels, not so much for cats.

My human friend, Glenn and his family live on the eastern plains of Colorado with a spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains from Pikes Peak to Longs Peak and far off to the west.

The snowiest months in Colorado are:

  • December - Often marks the beginning of the snow season with significant snowfall.

  • January - Typically the snowiest month, with consistent winter storms.

  • February - Continues the trend of heavy snowfall, especially in the mountains.

  • March - Can bring substantial snow, particularly in late winter storms.

  • April - Often sees spring snowstorms, contributing to total snowfall.

  • November - Occasionally experiences early season snow, setting the stage for winter.

This winter season was anything but typical. The total amount of snow for 2025-2026 winter and spring seasons is very low. In fact, snowpack levels across Colorado are currently 37% of normal. Colorado's annual average snowfall total is 213".

This means reservoirs will have less water this year unless we get a helluva lot more snow this spring. Snowfall patterns are shifting as the climate warms, with many regions already seeing declines. These shifts impact water supply, ecosystems, winter recreation and hydro-power generation.

As winter temperatures rise, they create less favorable conditions for snow to accumulate.

“Over the course of a generation, we’ve crossed that critical threshold from below freezing to above freezing,” Elizabeth Burakowski, a research assistant professor at the University of New Hampshire told USA TODAY. “Once you get above freezing, you’re more likely to see winter precipitation fall as rain instead of snow.”

Without snow, the ground absorbs more heat, creating a warming feedback loop.

Us squirrels need the snow to melt for much water throughout the year. We all need water, right? Life would not exist without it.

But, this morning we stuck our little squirrel heads out of our tree to sniff the air. We saw SNOW coming from the sky!

WHEEEEEE!!!!

Good thing we still have acorns stashed from last year.

Then we saw two other animal friends outside. One is kinda small and the other is SO BIG!

 Jackson and Niko

The cat wasn’t very happy with the cold and wet snow. He went back in the house almost as soon as he came outside to check things out. The BIG DOG was very happy laying in the snow and watched the snow fly from the deck.

We’re so happy to see the spring snow!

More water for everyone - especially for the trees and plants. Means more acorns for us this autumn!

Remember to be grateful all that you are receiving this and every day.

Love from the snow trees.
